03 WASH Infrastructure Delivery Programme

Holistic Programme Delivery - from Strategy & Construction to Education & Monitoring

Sago Network has a diverse team that extends from WASH specialists, to a registered nurse to registered architects and experienced builders who, collectively, are able to achieve all aspects of WASH Infrastructure Delivery for communities. The team knows from experience that improved village health starts with positive and lasting improvements to water, sanitation and hygiene awareness and facilities. These strides forward can only be achieved from a comprehensive programme that encompasses:

  • Hygiene awareness and promotion from day 1.

  • Community consultation and in-field WASH Assessment to identify community needs.

  • WASH Strategy to determine appropriate infrastructure responses.

  • Programme Partnership formation to ensure community is at the centre of the process.

  • Formation of village sanitation and water committees to build capacity, ownership and built outcomes.

  • Master-planning with committees to determine the location of WASH facilities throughout a community.

  • Design, fabrication, logistics, construction and project management of WASH Infrastructure Delivery, such as 20 toilet programmes with hand washing facilities.

  • WASH Empowerment Programme to ensure facility users receive training regarding facility use and maintenance and all broader community members benefit from WASH education and awareness.

  • Ongoing monitoring and evaluation at 6 monthly intervals for an 18 month period to ensure owners are comfortable with facility use and maintenance and to ensure any lessons in programme delivery improve every subsequent delivery programme.

Sanitation Programmes

Sago Network has extensive experience in sanitation programmes using both Ventilated Improved Pit Latrines, when appropriate, and the in-house developed Sago Dry Toilet when high water table environments are present or when a permanent sanitation solution is required. Sago Network undertakes sanitation delivery programmes for projects that involve 20 or more toilets where the type of facility can be any of the following:

01 Family Toilets - The Extended-Family Ownership Model

Sago Network’s experience is that the family ownership model of is the most successful mode to balance health outcomes with facility management and maintenance. When using the Sago Dry Toilet this sees 1 single toilet serve an extended family of up to 25 people. The toilet structure or Liklik Haus that is delivered as part of a WASH Infrastructure Delivery Programme can be constructed flexibly as either a:

  1. Community built structure for maximum cost effectiveness and ownership, or;

  2. Fully constructed timber structure using milled timber for a quality local result, or;

  3. Steel base structure with self-built walls and roof by families to balance durability and cost, or;

  4. Fully prefabricated, flat-packed steel-framed solutions for rapid in-field delivery when appropriate.

02 School Facilities - Toilets for Community-wide Impact

Sanitation programmes have their broadest benefit when helping to improve the health and school attendance of a community’s kids. Schools, however, require a holistic approach to education, awareness and maintenance. The Sago Network school sanitation programme includes consideration of:

  • Facilities that consider Gender Equity and Social Inclusion (GESI) with the incorporation of female wash facilities, disabled access ramps and increased privacy/security.

  • Hygiene awareness through education and awareness workshops which educate students about healthy hygiene habits.

  • Hygiene behaviour – toilets are always installed with hand washing facilities that are located along the path of travel and include clear signage and reminders for students.

  • Maintenance programmes and capacity building of the local community to engender ownership of the facilities for long term care.

  • Smaller children are catered for with smaller toilet seats and lower pedestals.
